Jersey History
Well I've actually never been to Russia, so kind of breaking my own rule here, but my wife has been and she actually got me this jersey as a gift. Funny enough she would travel there right after our first date. Definitely thought I blew it because that seemed like a farfetched excuse to not see me again. But we kept in touch the whole time and when she came back, well the rest is history. Russia joined the IIHF on April 1, 1952 and currently are not able to participate in international tournaments due to them starting the war with Ukraine. The 2014 Winter Olympics would take place in Sochi, Russia being the first time the Olympics were held in Russia in the post-Soviet era. Russia would not do so well this tournament losing in the quarterfinals against Finland and ended with a record of 2-1-1-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L). Canada would end up taking gold, Sweden would take silver, and Finland would take the bronze medal.

This jersey was team issued during the 2014 Winter Olympics. Being in the top division, the jersey would be made of Nike's Swift material which was very lightweight, form fitting, and included a tie down fight strap. The Nike swoosh logo would be heat pressed in the top right shoulder and the Sochi Winter Olympics patch would be sewn on the back bottom hem. The tagging includes the IIHF Authentic Collection tag as well as a screen printed numbered size and "Made in Canada" on the inside neck. The inside bottom hem includes the heat pressed Nike bar-code.

The main crest would be the coat of arms of Russia and "РОССИЯ" (Russia) below it, both would be heat pressed onto the jersey. The numbers are double layered twill sewn onto the jersey and the name is heat pressed onto the nameplate which is sewn to the jersey. The jersey style would be worn during the preliminary round against Slovenia winning 5-2, against Slovakia winning 1-0, and the qualification round against Norway winning 4-0. This jersey style would be modeled after the existing national team jerseys and would be only worn for this tournament.

Alexander Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer to ever play the game of hockey. It's pretty crazy to say that! Born in Moscow, Soviet Union, Ovechkin would grow up playing with Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Super League before being drafted first overall by the Washington Capitals in 2004. With the Capitals, Ovechkin would solidify his legendary career winning just about every trophy you can as a forward including the Stanley Cup in 2018 and cementing himself as the number one goal scorer in the NHL after surpassing Wayne Gretzky in 2025. For Russia, Ovechkin would participate in just about every tournament he could. This would be his third Olympics for Russia. During the 2014 Olympics, Ovechkin would play 5 games while scoring 1 goal, 1 assist, collecting 0 PIMs, and finishing +2 overall.
