Jersey History |
Well I got very lucky acquiring this jersey from another collector and very happy to add another rare jersey to the mix! Japan has done a good job staying towards the top divisions with their womens team really solidifying their spot in the top division. Japan joined the IIHF earlier on, doing so on January 26, 1930. They currently rank #24 for men's in the world, #7 for women's in the world, and reside in Division I Group A for men's IIHF tournaments. The 2018 IIHF World Championship Division I Group B tournament would take place in Kaunas, Lithuania. They would do well this tournament coming in 2nd with a record of 2-2-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L). Lithuania would end up winning the tournament with Estonia taking 3rd.
This jersey was game worn during the 2018 IIHF World Championship Division I Group B tournament. Being in the lower divisions, the jersey would be made of Tackla's Airknit material which was very soft, and form fitting. The IIHF logo would be sublimated on the front neck area and the IIHF main logo would be sublimated on the back bottom hem. The tagging includes the IIHF Authentic Collection tag as well as Tackla's retail tag and size in letter form.
The main crest would be the Japan Ice Hockey Federation's main logo which would be sublimated on. The numbers are sublimated onto the jersey and the name is sublimated onto the nameplate which is sewn to the jersey. This jersey was worn during games against Croatia winning 4-3, Lithuania losing 1-6, and Romania winning 3-2. This jersey style would be worn for IIHF tournaments from 2015-2018 and would only be sponsored by Wojas in 2015. Otherwise, lower divisions typically did not have sponsors on the jerseys.

Front Logo
Ryuichi Kawai established himself on the Japanese national team early on. Born in Sapporo, Japan, Kawai would grow up playing hockey in Japan in the junior and professional leagues. He would bounce around different teams as they came and went in the JIHL (Japan Ice Hockey League) and the Asia League. He would have success though winning the Asia League Championship in 2010-2011 with the Tohoku Free Blades. For Japan, Kawai would immediately make an impact helping the U18 and U20 teams advance through the ranks. It would take him a bit, but he would eventually join the senior team as a puck moving defenseman. The 2018 tournament would be his fourth World Championship. During the tournament, Kawai would play 5 games while scoring 0 goals, 0 assists, collecting 2 PIMs, and finishing -3 overall.
