Jersey History |
Covering more tournament basis here with a jersey from the Olympic Qualifiers. Italy joined the IIHF on January 24, 1924 and currently rank #20 for men's in the world, #19 for women's in the world, and reside in the Division I Group A for men's IIHF tournaments. The 2021 Group E Final Olympic Qualification tournament was held in Riga, Latvia. Hockey teams for the Winter Olympics are decided by the IIHF World Championships where the top eight teams receive a spot, the host country receives a spot, and the other three spots are secured by the winners of the Final Olympic Qualifications. With Italy hosting the Winter Olympics in 2026 they're guaranteed to have a team play, but Italy would not do so well coming in 4th this tournament with a record of 0-0-0-3 (W-OTW-OTL-L). Latvia would end up winning gold, and playing in the 2022 Winter Olympics, with France winning silver and Hungary winning bronze.
This jersey was game worn during the 2021 Group E Final Olympic Qualifications. These tournaments do not have a specific jersey manufacturer, but this jersey would be made of Nike's Swift material which was very lightweight, form fitting, and included a tie down fight strap. The Nike swoosh logo would be sewn in the top right chest and the IIHF patch would be sewn on the back bottom hem. The tagging includes the IIHF Authentic Collection tag as well as a screen printed numbered size and "Made in Canada" on the inside neck. The inside bottom hem includes the heat pressed Nike bar-code.
The main crest would be the main ice hockey logo of the Federazione Italiana Sport del Ghiaccio (Italian Ice Sports Federation) which is heat pressed on. The left sleeve would have an Italian flag patch sewn to the jersey. The numbers are single layered twill heat pressed onto the jersey and the name is heat pressed onto the nameplate which is sewn to the jersey. This jersey was worn during the games against the Hungary losing 1-2, France losing 0-2, and Latvia losing 0-6. This jersey style would be worn for IIHF tournaments from 2019-2021 and be sponsored by Südtirol in 2021.

I love when I can actually speak to the players about their careers. Tommaso Traversa has been making great strides in his career and hopes to join the Olympic team in 2026. Born in Torino, Italy, Traversa would actually make it overseas to play NCAA DIII hockey for Hobart College. After graduating he would play a season in the ECHL before heading back overseas to have a short stint in the EIHL, and eventually would join the Alps Hockey League until his team moved to the ICEHL (Austrian Hockey League) where he would spend a half season before moving back to the EIHL. After the EIHL he would rejoin the AlpsHL where he plays with Cortina today. This would be Traversa's second Final Olympic Qualifications representing Italy. During this tournament, Traversa would play 3 games while scoring 0 goals, 0 assists, collecting 4 PIMs, and finishing 0 overall.
