Jersey History |
In Canada, if you don't own a hockey stick your citizenship is revoked and you're deported to Mississippi. Honestly though, Canada is the ice hockey powerhouse of the world. They joined the IIHF on April 26, 1920 and currently rank #1 for men's in the world, #1 for women's in the world, and reside in the top division for men's IIHF tournaments. 2008 marked the 100th Anniversary of the IIHF and to commemorate it the IIHF had a special patch, sewn on the back bottom hem, for each team to wear. The 2008 IIHF World Championship would take place in Canada, being the first time the tournament wasn't held in Europe since 1962, in the cities of Halifax and Québec City. This was also the tournament where the IIHF finalized the Triple Gold Club and would hold a ceremony to honor the 19 players who have achieved it. Most teams introduced new home and away jerseys and would wear a special throwback jersey during this tournament. As expected, Canada would do well this tournament and make it all the way to the gold medal game, but were defeated by Russia in overtime finishing the tournament with a record of 8-0-1-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L). Finland would come in 3rd defeating Sweden.
This jersey was team issued during the 2008 IIHF World Championship. Being in the top division, the jersey would be made of Nike's Swift material which was very lightweight, form fitting, and included a tie down fight strap. The Nike swoosh logo would be sewn in the top right shoulder and the IIHF Anniversary patch would be sewn on the back bottom hem. The tagging includes the IIHF Authentic Collection tag as well as a screen printed numbered size and "Made in Canada" on the inside neck. The inside bottom hem includes the heat pressed Nike bar-code.
The main crest would be the logo for Hockey Canada and the sleeves would include a patch of the Canadian leaf and "CANADA" written below it. Both would be sewn onto the jersey. The numbers are double layered twill sewn onto the jersey and the name is heat pressed onto the nameplate which is sewn to the jersey. The jersey style would be worn during the preliminary round against Slovenia winning 5-1, the qualifying round against Germany winning 10-1, and the quarter finals against Norway winning 8-2. This jersey style would be worn for IIHF tournaments from 2008-2014 and in 2016.

Well what can I say about Jonathan Toews that I haven't already said. Born in Winnipeg, Canada, this would be the only international tournament where Toews did not win a gold medal. Kind of the reason why I have this one as it's his one "scar" on what is an NHL and International Hall of Fame career. This would be Toews' second World Championship after winning gold in the previous World Championship and Junior World Championship. During the 2011 tournament, Toews would play 9 games while scoring 2 goals, 3 assists, collecting 8 PIMs, and finishing 0 overall.
